You probably have several doors in your house. You probably even have doors that are hanging loose on their hinges. If you are dealing with some loose hinges which are causing your doors to hang loose, it can be an easy repair that you can do yourself. There are several methods, and with some of them you don't need to have any more tools than some wood glue and a screwdriver.
Toothpicks and Wood Glue
One big cause of loose hinges is that the holes for the screws have become stripped. There isn't enough wood left in the screw hole for the screw to grip on to. The easiest way to fix this is to give the screw something more to grab. The easiest way to do this is to get some toothpicks and wood glue. What you need to do first is take the hinge off the wall. Then, you will need to cut the toothpicks to the right size. Put one toothpick into the hole and make a mark on the toothpick when it is even with the doorframe. Then, cut or break several toothpicks to that size.
Once you have prepared your toothpicks, it's time to get the repair started. What you need to do is to brush some wood glue around the inside of the hole. You can use a toothpick or cotton swab to do that. You just need to make sure that the entire hole is filled with glue. Then, you just need to start putting in your prepared toothpicks. Start at the bottom of the hole and build up the side equally. That way, there is something to support the top toothpicks. Flat toothpicks work best, but round ones will work too if you can't find the flat ones. After the glue dries, you can put the hinge back together again. The screw should be nice and tight, and your door should hang well.
Another option for you to use is dowel rods. With this method, you are going to need to have a drill. You are going to need to find a dowel rod that is just a little smaller around than the hole for the screw. You can find dowel rods or dowel plugs at your local hardware or home improvement store.
When you get the dowel rod or plug, you may need to do a little trimming to make sure that they aren't too long. You can leave them a little long, and trim them once they are installed. Take some wood glue and put it on the outside of the dowel plug, and then fit it into the hole. Once the glue has dried, take a drill with a bit that is slightly smaller than the plug, and drill out the inside of it. If you need to trim them down, this would be the time to do it. After you have done all that, you can install the hinge. It should be nice and tight.
